It is indeed that time again folks! The Met welcomes back another truly hilarious line-up of laughter, at the First Thursday Comedy Club on Thursday 5 August starting at 8.30pm.

Britain’s one-and-only deaf comedian Steve Day kick-starts the evening with his warm wit and engaging charm. Since going on his first national tour back in 2006, he went on to become a finalist in the Daily Telegraph’s Open Mic Award in 2000 and has had several one-man shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

“Revelatory and very funny” - The Guardian

Next up on the stage will be deadpan comic Dan Bland, with his beautifully delivered razor-sharp humour. Since his first gig in March 2005, Dan has peddled his comedic wares across the country.

“If you imagine the late Ian Curtis had chosen to do stand-up (rather than join Joy Division) that should give you an idea of Bland’s appeal” - bbc.co.uk

Top Compere Jo Wilson and the ‘Mackem motormouth’ Mark Rough will also be gracing the stage to provide audiences with even more comedy and gags. Be careful those sides don’t literally split!

Tickets for the evening are priced at £8. Make sure you guarantee yourself a seat by calling the ticket office on 0161 761 2216, visiting The Met website ww.themet.biz or by telephoning Quaytickets on 0844 815 4870.

The Grants Arms in Ramsbottom welcomes Otis Gibbs on 28th July at 8pm who will be performing an RnB Festival taster gig to promote the annual festival taking place on 25 September in pubs across the town.

Otis Gibbs is a man in search of an honest experience. Some people refer to him as a folk artist, but that is a simplistic way to describe a man who has planted over 7,000 trees, slept in hobo jungles and has an FBI file.

A modern day Woody Guthrie, his songs based in people experience and their struggles. Strong in socialist beliefs - put Gibbs in the company of Bob Dylan, The Clash, and Chuck Berry. Gibbs will be performing songs from his current album, Joe Hill’s Ashes. Cited as his best album to date, the album showcases Otis’ pure song writing ability coupled with his gravely, sunny voice.

“…music that mixes Bob Dylan and Neil Young-esque acoustic with bluegrass, country and polished-up blues.” Emo corner

This event and the Ramsbottom R&B Festival are promoted by The Met. Tickets are available from The Met box office priced at £8 in advance, or on the door at the event from The Grants Arms priced £10.

The Met welcomes Scottish roots revival band Old Blind Dogs on Thursday 1 July at 8pm.

Since forming in the early 1990’s, Old Blind Dogs have stood on the cutting edge of Scotland’s roots revival. The band has developed its own trademark style with an energetic mix of songs and tunes. Dynamic percussion, polished vocals, soaring fiddle and stirring pipes fuel the delicately-phrased melodies and traditional songs.
The Dogs, one of Scotlands most highly touted traditional folk bands, are not known for shying away from change. The Dogs popularity has never dimmed though and the current foursome of Jonny Hardie (fiddle, guitar and vocals), Aaron Jones (bouzouki, guitar, vocals), Ali Hutton (Border pipes, whistles, vocals) and Fraser Stone (drums, percussion) have proven more than capable of carrying on the tradition of the band that the Montreal Gazette called “…a Scots neo-traditional supergroup with a bracingly modern musical attack.”
“The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm…as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion” The Scotsman.
Sixteen years is a long time in the life of any band and most who reach that milestone are content to rest on the tried and true formulas that have worked in the past. Not so for Scotlands Old Blind Dogs whose newly released Four on the Floor takes them bravely in many new directions.
“Old Blind Dogs bring freshness and colour to acoustic music steeped in centuries of Scottish folklore and history.” (The Los Angeles Times)

Hegley tells tales about a Frenchman with some unusual [but clean] habits, which include burying his dog’s kennel and his own luggage pieces. The stories appear alongside other new works, which include an address to aliens on the subject of transport a poem about a non-talking parrot and some animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief.

‘Typically brilliant songs and stories about a Gallic small-town hero with a dog called Chirac’ The Guardian

The audience are invited to sing along. But not to dance. Much.

Hegley is known as a poet and singer with a common and comedic touch, hence the quotation from The Observer, ‘Awesomely mundane’

“Wouldn’t you rather be free, just for a day, than spend a lifetime in a cage?”

It’s Beijing, capital of China, in the summer of 1966 and the Cultural Revolution is impacting every aspect of life. We see it through the eyes of Guo Yue, an eight year old boy who plays with his friends, runs errands for his family, flies kites, and plays the flute, desperately hoping that the bird he keeps in a cage will accompany him. Through hard lessons, Yue learns that the bird can only sing when it is free.

Little Leap Forward is a thought provoking and visually stunning play about freedom and creativity, that has both charm and universal appeal in equal measure.

Created by Horse + Bamboo Theatre, last seen at The Met with In the Shadow of Trees and Deep Time Cabaret, the story incorporates mask, puppetry, animation and original music. The music also includes the distinctive playing of Guo Yue (recorded), now an internationally renowned flautist.

Little Leap Forward is based on the celebrated book Little Leap Forward, co-written by Guo Yue and Clare Farrow published last year.
Tickets are priced at £10, £6 concessions. Guarantee your place now by calling the ticket office on 0161 761 2216, visit The Met website www.themet.biz, or ring Quaytickets on 0844 815 4870.

These guys are the latest stars who were Made in Bury.
John Warburton combines one-liners, observational comedy and the occasional song. John is also City Life Comedian of the Year.

Danny Deegan is best known from ITV’s Stand Up Britain. “Cut me and I bleed Black Pudding!”

Last but not least, Phil Buckley is a former finalist for City Life’s Comedian of the Year,

This comedy night turns the spotlight on Bury at a major time - with the £350 million redevelopment of The Rock about to open this summer, following recent openings of a new Fusiliers Museum and Transport Museum, and major building and investment projects taking place across the town centre.

The Met welcomes Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings on Thursday 27 May at 8pm.

Known as the lead singer of Bellowhead, and for his work in the duo Spiers and Boden, BBC Folk Singer of the Year 2010 Jon Boden returns for this extraordinary show with his four-piece band The Remnant Kings and with a new style aptly named folkapocalyptica.

From the post-industrial themes of the remarkable solo album Songs from the Floodplain, Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings take us on a journey from old to new.
Including interpretations of traditional material, Bach played on concertina and fiddle and underscored wax cylinder recordings of Victorian post-apocalyptic literature, Boden explores the theme of a rural community coming to terms with apocalyptic turmoil and it’s aftermath.

This deliciously dark subject produces some arrestingly powerful results - dark yet uplifted by the indomitable nature of the human spirit. The event will also include the occasional rousing grunge classic from Jon’s first album, Painted Lady.
