Daughter of Loudon Wainwright and half sister to Martha and Rufus, it is hardly surprising that Lucy Wainwright Roche gave up teaching in New York and entered the famous family trade five years ago.

Now well-known for her powerful and distinctive voice, her songs showcase truly inspiring lyrics and vocals, and in 2007 she released an EP, 8 Songs. Last year the Independent Music Awards awarded her Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter for the song Snare Drum. Her new album, Lucy is due for release in March, ahead of a 16-date tour of the UK and Ireland.

“Sincere and raw, at times recalling Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, Roche’s bittersweet voice leaps out; she paints an indelible image…” NPR’s Song of the Day

Lucy will be supported by Met favourite Alana Levandoski,

The Met welcomes New York’s Preston Reed to its regular R&B Club on Friday 19 March at 8.30pm.

Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Reed practices a flamboyant self-invented style, characterized by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today’s guitarists.

“…a mesmerising set of instrumentals from the guitar virtuoso, taking on allcomers from funk to blues to jazz and beyond.” Uncut Magazine

Playing an array of guitars from acoustic to electric to classical Reed’s vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectation of a guitarist.
Reed’s compositional talents extend to film soundtracks and prestigious commissions for the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet.

Reed attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work.

“…each short piece evokes a beautifully lit scene of classic Americana.” BBC Music Magazine

Tickets for Preston Reed are £8, £6 concessions and the show starts at 8.30pm. To book or for more information please call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.

The Met welcomes Publick Transport Theatre Company with their brand new physical comedy show, the Department of Smelling Pistakes on Wednesday 3 March at 7.30pm.

Publick Transport presents a new comedy set in a forgotten office deep within the bowels of a Russian governmental building where two civil servants jostle for power, one a puffed up bureaucrat in search of a job description, the other an unidentified inspector, the purpose of whose visit remains frighteningly vague.

Reluctant to commit to specific thought for fear of showing ignorance of the party line - which changes hourly - they make idle conversation out of which is extrapolated the deepest meaning, while their attempts at political correctness only result in grammatical incorrectness.

“More fun than you would ever imagine an hour spent on the brink of death could be! Publick Transport expertly combine physical theatre with dark comedy…”
The Big Issue

Suitable for ages 10+. The show is performed by Angus Barr and Toby W.Davies, and co-directed by Phil Booth (Bloolips).

The Met welcomes Dynamic young folk duo John Spiers and Jon Boden on Friday 5 March at 8pm.

Founders of the Big-Band folk phenomenon Bellowhead, Spiers and Boden are at the forefront of the new folk revival. Admired by their peers, this multi award winning duo have picked up an award at every Folk Awards for the past few years - this year, Jon Boden was named Folk Singer of the Year.

The pair have been wowing audiences up and down the country with their unique blend of traditional English folk song with a contemporary twist and hi-octane dance tunes which get everyone dancing. Spiers and Boden deliver a big, thumping night out with showmanship, humour and raw stomping energy.

Jon Boden (singer, fiddle, guitar, stomp-box) follows in the footsteps of many of the great folk-singers with his theatrical style that can tell the story of a 20 verse ballad from the 18th century while maintaining the audience’s attention throughout every twist and turn of the story and then sing a roaring sea-shanty with enough gusto to get everyone joining in. All the time Jon plays fiddle with an earthy vigour that’s utterly compelling.

John Spiers (melodeon, concertina) has taken the traditional squeezebox styles and blended them with his knowledge of contemporary dance music to create an infectious acoustic groove that sounds like folk music but has an amazing effect on the uninitiated.

“The finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene, and the contemporary equivalent of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick” The Guardian

Tickets for the show are £14, £12 concession and the show starts at 8pm. To book or for more information please call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.

The Met welcomes Oregon band Richmond Fontaine on Sunday 28 ...

The Met welcomes Oregon band Richmond Fontaine on Sunday 28 February at 8pm.

Formed in 1994, the four-piece alternative country band has written and produced some remarkably emotive music reflecting the ups and downs of life in Western America. The band has released eight studio albums, underpinned by lead singer and songwriter, Willy Vlautin’s lyrics.

Richmond Fontaine songs often evoke imagery of Reno, Nevada, Portland, the Western United States and Mexico while telling stories in a style that critics have compared to Raymond Carver. Musically the group has cited influences such as Gram Parsons, Green on Red and Dave Alvin.

“There’s a real heat to the band’s performance, and an unassuming brilliance to much that they do…why it took so long for such a great band to show up on our radar remains, frankly, baffling.” Uncut Magazine

The band’s new album, and most accessible yet, We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River follows on from the band’s albums Thirteen Cities (2007), the stripped down, The Fitzgerald (2005) and the alt country classic Post To Wire (2004), which was named 4th best album of the year by Uncut (behind Brian Wilson, Wilco, & Loretta Lynn).

Willy Vlautin’s literate lyrical style landed him a publishing deal which saw the publication of two novels, one of which is currently being made into a motion picture

Tickets for the show are £13 and the show starts at 8pm. To book or for more information please call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.

The Met welcomes, legendary Lindisfarne guitarist Rod Clements on Saturday 27 February at 8.30pm.

Tyneside’s Rod Clements is one of the most widely respected figures in British folk roots, both as an artist in his own right and through his associations with such seminal figures as Bert Jansch and Thea Gilmore, topping the charts with Ralph McTell and touring the world with Pentangle.
Rod released his first solo album Stamping Ground in 2000. His last album Odd Man Out in 2006 consolidated BBC Radio Scotland’s assessment of him as “…a man emerging from the Lindisfarne years and carving his own unique furrow in inimitable style.”
Live, Clements performs classic Lindifarne hits and compelling songs from his landmark solo albums with wit, panache and spine-tingling slide guitar. His vocal delivery, at once throwaway and passionate, is complimented by his expertise on both dobro and acoustic six-string and his laid-back, conversational presentation.

The Met welcomes back the award winning punk play Meeting ...

The Met welcomes back the award winning punk play Meeting Joe Strummer on Thursday 25 February at 7.30pm.

Packed full of loud music, raucous comedy - and deep respect for the music and life of the great Joe Strummer, the play is an emotional blast through rebel politics since punk - and a celebration of the man who set the agenda for a generation. But it’s not a tribute to The Clash or Strummer, really it’s a heartfelt play about friendship.

Meeting Joe Strummer charts the friendship of two lads over three extraordinary decades. Meeting as teenagers in the late ’70s, at the legendary Anti-Nazi League concert in Victoria Park, the play follows their lives as they cope with the Thatcher years and crap 80s music, struggle to stay true to the cause while paying the bills and maintaining relationships, and how they grew up in the real world while trying to stay true to the myth of their hero.

Joe Strummer was a hero to many, including Paul Hodson (writer & director) and Steve North (performer). After Strummer’s tragically early death just before Christmas 2002, Paul and Steve began talking about making a piece of theatre to celebrate his life. A biopic type show seemed wrong; but a piece that told of Joe’s spirit, passion, talent and humour through the eyes of some of his fans seemed right.

Meeting Joe Strummer is played in a deliberately rough-and-ready, semi stand-up style. It glows with warmth, humour and self-deprecation - ‘it’s required viewing, not just for Strummer’s many admirers, but also for anyone who enjoys funny, perceptive and passionately sincere new writing.’ Manchester Evening News

The Met welcomes the Caroline Chocolate Drops on Saturday 6 February at 8pm for one of only eight dates in the UK.

Carolina Chocolate Drops are a young string band in the centuries-old Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition. The group’s members - Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson - all trade duties as singers and swap instruments, and have continuously since 2005.

Old-time Southern string music is often associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, not African-Americans from the North Carolina Piedmont. Carolina Chocolate Drops seek to not only correct this misunderstanding, but to keep the old-time string music tradition alive.

Their new album, Genuine Negro Jig features string band interpretations of Blu Cantrell’s beat-box driven R&B single Hit ‘Em Up Style and Tom Waits’ Trampled Rose, as well as a pair of original compositions, alongside traditional tracks. It is the band’s second record; their 2007 release, Dona Got a Ramblin’ Mind, was praised by Paste Magazine for “bravely and expertly reclaiming the string band tradition for modern African-American culture.”

Tickets for the show are £16 and the show starts at 8pm, all proceeds go to Mr Kite Benefits. To book or for more information please call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.

The Met welcomes blues band The Hamsters who will be performing their very special Hendrix and ZZ Top show on Thursday 4 February at 8pm.

Blues trio The Hamsters have long been established as a premier blues-rock attraction. Although primarily playing their own brand of rootsy rock, blues and americana, they’re also widely regarded as the UK’s leading interpreters of the music of Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top.

“Nobody does the music of Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top better (except the real ZZ Top)” The Times

Originally forming for their own amusement (and taking their name from the Sex Pistols, who once used it as a pseudonym to outwit hostile councils), The Hamsters enjoy the irony of being an aggressive band with a cuddly name. Members have performed with artists such as Eric Clapton, Alison Moyet, Doctor Feelgood, Walter Trout and the late, great gentleman of British Blues, Alexis Korner.

Tickets for the show are £12 advance or £14 on the door and the show starts at 8pm. . To book or for more information please call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.

The Met welcomes Morecambe - Bob Golding’s extraordinary portrayal of the life of Britain’s best loved comic on Wednesday 3 February at 7.30pm.

This fantastic show commemorates the 25th anniversary of Eric Morecambe’s untimely final curtain, and is a moving portrait of an affectionate lad with funny bones, a born entertainer, a big-hearted perfectionist… the tall one with glasses.

Featuring the multi-talented Bob Golding - who could have been born to play Eric - penned by the brilliant Tim Whitnall and directed by solo-maestro Guy Masterson, Morecambe is a must-see for all fans of classic British comedy.

“Golding’s is a tour-de-force tribute to Eric Morecambe. I have rarely experienced a warmer, funnier or more touching one-man show. * * * * *” The Daily Telegraph

The show premiered at Edinburgh Festival last year and is currently in a six week run at the Duchess Theatre in the West End, before touring the UK.

The Met welcomes traditional Irish music band, Dervish on Friday 29 January at 8pm.

For over twenty years there has been no better way to get a taste of the traditions and the magic of Sligo, in the North West of Ireland than through the music of Dervish. They have performed throughout every corner of the globe, playing for heads of state and for an audience of 240,000 in Rio de Janeiro. They have shared the stage with James Brown, The Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM and Beck.

Onstage, a Dervish performance ranges from powerful and energetic dance tunes to sublime interpretations of Irish songs and airs with vocals, fiddle, flute, accordion, bodhran, mandola and bouzouki. Interwoven with Cathy’s beguiling voice and engaging stage presence, an evening with Dervish is filled with enough warmth, conviviality and inspiration fill a lifelong memory.

Year after year their CDs have topped Folk, World and Roots Music charts in Ireland and worldwide and have met with rave reviews in the international media. Readers of Irish Music Magazine have awarded Dervish Best Overall Trad/Folk Band of the Year and, in what is perhaps their proudest moment, Sligo City Council bestowed on them Freedom of the Borough in recognition of their work.

Dervish are Cathy Jordan (vocals), Liam Kelly (flute/whistles), Shane Mitchell (accordion), Tom Morrow (fiddle), Michael Holmes (bouzouki), Brian McDonagh (mandola).

The Met welcomes The Big Figures featuring Mark Radcliffe on Saturday 30 January at 8pm.

The Big Figures are a proper R & B band in the classic Dr.Feelgood mould. Radio 2 DJ Mark Radcliffe and his best mate of over thirty years PJ Walmsley bonded over the Feelgood’s debut album Down By The Jetty when they met in hall of residence in September 1976. They vowed that one day they would emulate their heroes Lee Brilleaux and Wilko Johnson and be lead singer and guitarist in their own snarling, spitting rhythm and blues combo. Being bone idle, it took them three decades to get round to it.

The illustrious line-up is completed by three more hunks of burning Lancastrian love, ‘Go-go’ Johnny Jobson (harmonica), Cameron Sweetnam (bass) and Andy Hyams (drums). Feelgood aficionados will know that The Big Figure was the drummer in the original group and that explains the name of this band, rather than any reference to the middle aged spread experienced by certain members.

The Big Figures are also delighted to be sharing the stage with lap steel, one man blues band Tom Doughty. A pie eating and dog walking companion of Mark’s, Tom creates a unique sound and atmosphere with his orginal songwriting and range of vintage instruments.

Tickets are £10 advance/ £12 on the door, and the show starts at 8pm. To book call our ticket office on 0161 761 2216, go to the web site at www.themet.biz or ring Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500.
