Cara Dillon, Michael McGoldrick and Treacherous Orchestra headline the eighth annual Big Whistle Festival at The Met

The Met presents the eighth annual Big Whistle Festival on Thursday 19 – Saturday 21 February, featuring headliners Cara Dillon, Michael McGoldrick and Treacherous Orchestra.

With the humble tin whistle at its core, The Big Whistle Festival is a gathering of traditional and contemporary musicians for a weekend of groove laden gigs, intimate concerts and workshops. The festival opens with Cara Dillon, supported by Grainne Brady and Tina Jordan Rees. She will be presenting songs from her latest album A Thousand Hearts.

Friday evening brings Drop the Floor, a multi instrumental and vocal quartet whose infectious enthusiasm and musicality make for lively performances. The evening comes to a grand finish with Micheal McGoldrick, John McCusker and John Doyle who come to Big Whistle as part of a unique European tour. Michael McGoldrick will also be chatting to Phil Brown about his musical influences on Saturday morning in talk The Whistle and Me.

Saturday performances include Scots Trad Music Awards Live Act of the Year Breabach, renowned musician and composer Ross Ainslie and guitarist Ali Hutton and Monkey’s Fist, a four piece instrumental Celtic fusion band that draws from a wide range of traditions.

The weekend comes to a close with Treacherous Orchestra – an eleven strong folk big band that is a powerful force in Scottish music. They are sure to deliver an epic live performance, mixing up their original tunes with a theatrical anarchic rock attitude.

Nestled between all these great concerts The Big Whistle Festival also offers artist workshops and intimate sessions throughout Saturday 21 February, they include workshops with Nicola Beazley, members of Breabach and Ross Ainslie.

All concerts and workshops will take place within The Met in Bury, a nationally recognised centre for folk music boasting two venues, a restaurant and a professional recording studio.

Grab yourself a bargain and get a Saturday ticket for just £32. The ticket includes full access to all Big Whistle Festival shows and access to any festival workshop for just £1. Individual concerts and workshop prices vary. For full details and to book tickets visit www.themet.biz/bigwhistle or phone the Box Office on 0161 761 2216.
